What happens in Bridge is that if you select all the RAW+JPEG pairs in a folder and attempt to batch rename them with unique index numbers, for example, as used in my photo filing system, it will automatically recognise that the RAW+JPEG pairs are the same image, and add the same index number – the files still have unique filenames because the file extension is different.

This might work in other image browsers too – I confess I haven’t tried.

I use Adobe Bridge for batch renaming and it has a very smart feature that makes renaming RAW+JPEG pairs a breeze. So what happens if we try to rename them in Adobe Bridge?īut these RAW+JPEG pairs do present another layer of complication for image cataloguing because now you’ve got twice as many files and ideally you need to keep these image pairs together or associated in some way so that you know they’re two versions of the same image.

Here’s a folder full off RAW+JPEG image pairs. And sometimes the camera has effects modes you want to use with the backup of a RAW file too, such as the rather good Art Filters in Olympus cameras. You get a JPEG file you can share straight away, and use as a benchmark for your RAW adjustments, and a RAW file you can hone and tune at your leisure. This part looks at specific situation that lots of us face – what to do when you shoot RAW+JPEG pairs with your camera.

Part 1 explains the basic folder and file naming structure and how to batch rename photos in Adobe Bridge. Yes, it was the standard “ computer says no” response!īut all of a sudden, the solution revealed itself….Here’s part 2 of my mini-series on creating a basic image filing and naming system. And sadly, this omission has never been rectified, even 13 years after I started whining to Adobe about it….Īnyway, somewhat wearily, I began composing my reply by stating that Search & Replace couldn’t help with file renaming, and that was because Adobe don’t allow plugins to rename photos. I suspect the explanation is simply that “string substitution” was added to Bridge during Lightroom’s early days and was overlooked when LR’s batch rename feature was being designed. Replacing text in filenames is a common need, and for example Adobe Bridge’s renaming dialog box allows it with its “string substitution” option – see the bottom of this article.īut this capability has never been available in Lightroom. But it seems risky and I’d lose metadata for the images w/o XMP files. I could use the bulk filename changing tool, then delete the LR-cataloged-but-missing-image and then reimport the newly rename files. Pre-LR catalog I used a utility to do bulk file name changes on folders of files, but that will be a problem with the LR catalog. It appears Search and Replace does not work on filenames, only on metadata. … I need to remove text (“Scan_”) from the filename for images I scanned 4-5 years ago (and are now in my LR catalog). I had an interesting email from someone who uses my Search and Replace plug-in for Lightroom:
